11 exemplars awarded after the most successful Magnet submission in the history of the organization
CONSECUTIVE DESIGNATION
EXEMPLARS AWARDED
The Challange
In late 2021, after almost two years of the COVID-19 pandemic, significant changes in senior nursing leadership, and multiple competing initiatives, the organization recognized they needed additional support to meet the fall 2022 deadline for their 6th Magnet document – which included a redesign of their external nursing website and creation of a Nursing Annual Report.
The Solution
The organization partnered with Katie Stephens Consulting (KSC) to complete their Magnet document within a condensed timeframe. Additionally, with the support of KSC, they completely redesigned their external Nursing website and internal Nursing intranet site and published a robust 52-page Nursing Annual Report — a key feature in their Magnet document.
The Results
After document submission, the organization went straight to site visit with no additional documentation needed. They earned their 6th Magnet designation, receiving 11 exemplars for their patient and nursing outcomes. In the months following their recent recognition, the organization has seen a +50% reduction in nursing turnover and travel nurse utilization rates.
Katie’s collaborative approach and clear communication made the process extremely fluid, predictable, and successful.

Challenge
The COVID-19 pandemic hit this organization at a pivotal time in their Magnet designation process, forcing them to juggle multiple competing initiatives and rethink how to leverage valuable personnel. This reallocation of resources put a strain on the attention and focus that would have otherwise been directed toward completing the Magnet document.
In addition to the challenges posed by the pandemic, the organization also experienced significant changes in their senior nursing leadership and organizational structure. With nurses and nurse leaders focused on the frontlines of patient care, and bandwidth stretched thin, the Magnet Program Director (MPD), recognized the need for additional support to bring all the various elements of the Magnet document together within the required timeline.
In late 2021, the organization partnered with KSC to successfully complete their 6th Magnet document – which included redesigning their external nursing website and creating a Nursing Annual Report – before the fall 2022 deadline.
Goals for a successful Magnet project:
Complete and submit 6th Magnet document
Create the Nursing Annual Report
Redesign the external Nursing internet website
Primary challenges to successful completion of Magnet project:
Multiple competing programs and initiatives to launch and/or revamp during critical document writing timeframe
COVID-19 pandemic put strain on key stakeholders, creating bandwidth issues for Magnet document writing and other key deliverables for document submission
Solution
The organization partnered with KSC to complete their 6th Magnet document successfully. Additionally, with the support of KSC, they completely redesigned their external Nursing website, as well as their internal Nursing intranet site, and published a robust 52-page Nursing Annual Report — a key feature in their Magnet document.
The MPD and Katie met to review her initial gap analysis and, from there, developed a timeline for the remaining critical Magnet deliverables. Once team introductions were made and system access was granted, Katie began work immediately with minimal ramp-up time needed. Katie was able to offload multiple deliverables (including the Nursing Annual Report and the Nursing internet and intranet sites), allowing the MPD to focus her efforts on other organizational priorities that needed her full attention. As the timeline ended, the MPD and Katie met daily to ensure the document and its associated projects came together seamlessly.
Katie understood the asks and requirements to meet our Magnet document submission deadline, there was no need to explain anything. Once introductions were made, Katie was able to jump in and work to get evidence, outcomes, or additional details needed to satisfy each of the Sources of Evidence (SOEs).
